GPA Went to O.U. Math Day

GPA’s club Mu Alpha Theta went to Oklahoma University on November 7 to go to the O.U. Math Day competition. Nine of our math geniuses went to this event: Senior Drew Moore, Senior Samuel Prather, Senior Mackenzie Ford, Senior Even Gordon, Sophomore Luke Moore, Sophomore Paul Hedman, Sophomore Kyler Kaminski, Sophomore Jonathan Marks, and Sophomore Julian Walker.

The competition is in two parts the singles and the team competition. In the singles the people who are in it choose witch category of testing they want, algebra one, algebra two, geometry, or calculus. They have forty five minutes to complete all the questions. They award the top three people in each category. The team competition consist of three rounds and in each round they have two to three test each only three to five minutes long. Most of the questions are math questions but some can be from other subjects as well. There were around ninety teams each consisting of three to four members, but after each round only about a third of the teams make it to the next so by the last round there were around ten teams left.

We had three teams in the team competition, and two of the teams made it to the second round. None of our teams made it to the final round. Many people love this competition for its learning qualities

Mrs. Hedman said, “They get to work in a group and especially when they get to work on the group problems, they have types of problems they have never seen before so they have to work together.”

This is one of the many reasons why Mrs. Hedman like these competitions they promote learning and teamwork.

Sophomore Luke Moore said, “If you take some practice test you’ll be able to figure out what types of problems there are.”

He was the only winner of any competition in OU Math day. He won first place is Algebra II. He think that the only way they might have been more prepared for the competition is if they might have looked at these practices tests a little more.

Some people thought the competition has was not as good as has been in previous years.

Senior Drew Moore said, “I thought this year was not done quite as well last year. I thought it was not as organize as it should have been.”

He was not the only one. Him and other people who went said that the section two question were very advanced, while the section three were very simple.

Whether they did well or not these math geniuses still represented are school well, and will probably be doing it again. P
