
Basketball makes History
Varsity lady lions basketball began their season with 4 new key players; giving them new hope, as well as a new goal to win district. A challenge to which they eagerly rose, ending their season as Area Champs and winning their Area playoff game against Trinity Christian Willow park 56-24.
This original goal to win district was not only met, but exceeded by winning regionals.
Their season ended with a loss against Lubbock Christian in the Regional Playoff round 61-23.
These lady lions are the first GPA women’s team in 17 years to win district
“It was really amazing,” said Junior, Charli Abendroth (shooting guard).
“We are champs for the first time in 17 years and basically making history this year turning this program in a different direction, hopefully we will continue this trend into the future,” said Senior, Captain Hannah Turner (Point Guard).
The girls struggled in the beginning of the season but pulled it together for district.
At the root of this turnaround was the development of a strong team bond.
Head Coach, Tammy Evans helped provide ways for the team to get to know each other and build trust since the team added two new seniors and two new juniors to the roster.
“Coach Evans taught us to trust each other, and play as a team on and off the court, because many of us were new; and we did,” Senior Co-Captain Abi Ezmerlian, Forward.
“We are like a family, we have to build each other up and keep pushing,” said Junior Trinity Hansen, (forward).
Senior, Jada Anthony-Johnson, will be going to Bethel College in Kansas next year to extend her basketball career.
“She will excel, and overcome any complications because her determination and passion for sport,” said Hansen.
