Writer tells Christmas tale of…Woe…Oh…Oh

All around the world people celebrate Christmas differently. We all get into the spirit of gift-giving…children waiting for the big surprise.
In China, the kids wait for Dun Che Lao Ren (“Christmas Old Man”), in France: Pere Noel, in Germany: Kris Kringle but in America we best know him as Santa Claus.

In America, most kids take Christmas and Santa Claus very seriously. We write a list for him of what we want, bake cookies for him, and even leave milk out Christmas Eve…all for this mysterious being.

Kids, if you believe in Santa Claus, stop reading right now. Spoiler Alert.

However, if you already know about this mystery man, read on at your own risk…

Are you still reading?

Ok, now let me tell you how my heart was broken Christmas morning and how sad I was to uncover this mystery.

Everyone finds out sooner or later that Santa isn’t an actual person, but more of an idea, right? Many of us find out when our sibling says, “You know he’s just made up, right?”

I wish I had it that easy…..

December 25th, when I was six-years-old, bright and early in the morning, I decided I was going to see Santa one way or another and I didn’t care how.

What kid doesn’t try to stay up to see Santa?…

Well most kids may not because they know if they are up, he or she won’t get any presents, ‘blah blah blah, I think to myself.

Well, I’m just not ‘most kids’, so I am going to try,’ I thought.

And here’s how my heart was crushed:
I walk out of my room to check the cookies and milk on the table in the living room.

‘Are they gone?’ I wonder.

As I’m walking, I hear a thump and I’m just like OH MY! I CAN’T BELIEVE HE SHOWED UP!

Just as shocked as ever, I peek around the corner and see and hear…NOTHING, so I do what any kid would do and….wait… and wait… and wait… and a whole hour later I’m still waiting!

Now I am CONVINCED Santa changed his mind about giving me my gifts!

After seeing no one, I start to think we have a ghost in the house, and this girl JUST WASN’T HAVING IT!

So I went back to my room, laid down, and watched TV…until about 20 mins later, when I hear another noise!

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking…’Why would you go and see what it is? ‘
Well, I was 6 and had only one thing on my mind: seeing Santa Claus.

Well the point is, I go and look, and do you know what I see?

An old person in Santa clothing!

I was so excited!
…until Santa turned around,
and I saw that it was…my mom….. My mother…MY VERY OWN
MOTHER…the one who told me about this fake guy in the first place…who doesn’t even eat the milk and cookies I set out!

She didn’t know I saw her, or that my heart was crushed.

I ran back to my room, wondering why?
Why would they lie?

I still enjoy Christmas, despite it all.
